Great read and yes! he was the real Mike Hammer..... there are not many writers that can compare with Spillane, and Jack Stang was the perfect role model. Kudos to his son Jack for telling Jack Senior's story. Please take the time to read... MSP
I heard about The Real Mike Hammer by Jack Stang but realized I did not have a "kindle!" Bought the kindle (from ), bought the book (from ) and WOW! the mystery began. I loved the very personal side of a son about his father who got involved with Mickey Spillane. I did get caught up on the history, the war and the personal touch the book portrayed from beginning to end. "Drama, mystery and love" in a "real life" family. How much better could it get! I hope the author, Jack Stang will continue to write more stories.
Over the years I have read all of the Mike Hammer books. I enjoyed each one. I had a interest in Mickey Spillane, where he got his idea to develop Mike Hammer from, now I know. Jack jr. had a wonderful idea writting the story as if his father were speaking. I got very lost in the wartime part of the book. The description of the action had me believing I was here. I loved the way the book ended. It showed how much Jack Sr. was a family man and as stated in the book many times, "he was a black and white person". I would recommend this book to all the Hammer fans out there. It will give you more insight into the reson why Mike Hammer was such a big hit.
I am fortunate to know the author of this book and know first-hand the love and admiration he has for his dad. In telling his story, that shines through. But it is more than just a story about his life. It is a story of what it means to be a marine. About how the training and hardships prepared them for what unknown terror lay ahead and about how their relationships of looking out for each other were what kept them going. All of this shaped Mr. Stang
into the man he became. A very good read!
If you like biographies and WWII drama, you will love this book. Jack Stang was emblematic of a generation not that long gone. This small town son was a Purple Heart soldier, a law-and-order loving policeman, a devoted family man and a tough guy all rolled into one man wrapped in hollywood glamour.
Reading the story behind “The Real Mike Hammer” was like watching an old classic movie on a rainy afternoon. I highly recommend this book.
I never read the Mickey Spillane books but did watch the television series so I had a basic idea of the Mike Hammer character. I enjoyed this book for its representation of old Hollywood and the many actors of that era. Also, I was intrigued by the real life story of Jack Hammer and his struggle with the possibility "Mike Hammer" fame could bring him.
I assume most readers of Mr Spillane's "Mike Hammer" series know the name Jack Stang, or are aware that there was a live flesh & blood person, Mickey used to pattern his main character. I was totally unaware of that fact until I was introduced to "The Real Mike Hammer"
The aforementioned is a great story & one destine to be written.
Jack Stang's life, was in many ways more intriguing, inspiring & gratifying than any fictional action book I have read. This was the real deal. That in itself is extraordinary!
Knowing the raconteur is Jack's own son, Jack Stang Jr., brings a greater authenticity to the story.
If Hollywood doesn't pick this up as a movie or television pilot, it will be their loss as well as ours.
